1. Introduction
MSN Messenger( now named Windows Live Messenger) is one of the most popular instant messenger software.
MSN use TCP port 1863 as the main connection port, if port 1863 is unreachable, it will try port 80 automatically.
MSN also can connect via a http/sock4/sock5 proxy server. Https is used to transfer username and password during the login session.
MSN use SIP(Session Initial Protocol) protocol to transfer files. Data channel can be established during
a direct connection or via MSN server( both tcp and udp are supported).
Once a direct connection is established, this connection will also be used to do some communication work.

2. How to monitor MSN?
Because MSN can communicate via http(80) port, so you can not block them by only disable one single port in the firewall.
We suggest you manage MSN's usage in two ways below:
- 1). Block all MSN server IP addresses.
- 2). Use professional network products to manage MSN usage.
3. Using WFilter to monitor MSN.
